2015 Solar Decathlon is on!

Posted by Dan On September 25th

The U.S. Department of Energy hosts the 2015 Solar Decathlon which challenges collegiate teams all across the country to compete against each other to see who can originate, construct, and maneuver solar-powered homes that are economical, energy-efficient, and eye-catching.

The team that comFafco Solar Solutionsbines affordability, buyer appeal, and design superiority with optimum energy production and all-out efficiency will win the competition. The competitors will spend roughly 2 years creating these houses that are to be powered by the sun.

Once completed, the final competition will consist of the teams facing off in 10 different contests to determine which house will be the overall winner.

The winning home will be affordable, aesthetically appealing, and simple to live in. It will also maintain relaxing and healthy interior environmental quarters.

It will supply energy to cook, clean, entertain, and commute with. It must provide acceptable hot water, and finally, produce as much, if not more, energy than it consumes. We are excited to watch the events unfold and see what the future holds. Let the games begin!

To learn more about it, check out the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon or to read about the past Solar Decathlon look up our past blog.

In short… Florida utilities say solar energy hurts the poor. The Pope says solar energy helps the poor.

Here’s a couple recent articles that support both points of view. I’ll let you draw your own conclusion.

This is music to my ears… “a global price on carbon emissions and a phase-out of fossil fuel subsidies.” Read the full story about the greenhouse gas emissions here…

Some electric utility companies are just plain foolish… such as this one in New Mexico. It may be wise for Floridians to keep an eye on energy battles in other states… we may be fighting similar battles here, soon.

Read about New Mexico’s major crossroads when it comes to coal and planning their energy future, in the article below.

Wow! Why is that?

It’s hard to believe, but Florida utilities would have you believe solar energy is a bad thing. In contrast Georgia utilities “see solar as a friend.” Read more.

This article reveals problems hidden within the current way utilities price electricity to their customers.

Net Metering

It’s another “big picture” perspective from the folks at Rocky Mountain Institute. Read the entire article for more about net metering and retail electricity pricing.

One thing you CAN do to help create a more sustainable world… don’t give them your money. Check out Go Fossil Free.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s U.N. Climate Summit Speech

Posted by Dan On September 30th

In case you missed it…

Leonardo DiCaprio addressed world leaders at the UN Climate Summit last week with bold statements such as:

“We need to put a price tag on carbon emissions and eliminate government subsidies for oil, coal and gas companies.”

For more goodies like that, watch his whole 4 minute speech here:

It makes me happy and hopeful to see so many people understanding the problem, and more importantly, doing something about it… like marching in the streets of NYC.

I enjoyed these thoughts on climate change in the The New York Times that Thomas Friedman dug up a few weeks ago.
