Why the Net Metering Debate Misses the Point

Posted by Dan On December 17th

This article reveals problems hidden within the current way utilities price electricity to their customers.

Net Metering

It’s another “big picture” perspective from the folks at Rocky Mountain Institute. Read the entire article for more about net metering and retail electricity pricing.

Divest from Fossil Fuels

Posted by Dan On November 25th

One thing you CAN do to help create a more sustainable world… don’t give them your money. Check out Go Fossil Free.

Divest from Fossil Fuels

And here’s a good article about the movement to divest from fossil fuels from Mother Earth News: Fossil Fuel Divestment: A Growing Movement.

Two and half years ago, Bill McKibben wrote an article called “The Great Carbon Bubble: Why the Fossil Fuel Industry Fights So Hard”.  It’s still a good read.  Check it out.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s U.N. Climate Summit Speech

Posted by Dan On September 30th

In case you missed it…

Leonardo DiCaprio addressed world leaders at the UN Climate Summit last week with bold statements such as:

“We need to put a price tag on carbon emissions and eliminate government subsidies for oil, coal and gas companies.”

For more goodies like that, watch his whole 4 minute speech here:

It makes me happy and hopeful to see so many people understanding the problem, and more importantly, doing something about it… like marching in the streets of NYC.

The People's Climate March

And for extra credit, read what I wrote 14 years ago(!) regarding the same issue. http://www.gosolarenergyforlife.com/three-problems-with-oil/

Solar Energy Used to Be Boring

Posted by Dan On April 15th

I remember there was a brief span of time, somewhere within the past forty years, when solar energy was a quiet and peaceful… predictable… sometimes a down right boring business to be involved in.

Not so today. Now it’s a crazy roller coaster ride. So, I figure… might as well have some fun.

Here’s just a small sample of what’s going on these days.

Look! No hands!

Energy Efficient Transportation Saves Money!

Posted by Dan On December 16th

You like to save money, right? Buy less gas? Do less harm? Of course you do!

Well, here’s my favorite report from the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) on energy efficient transportation. Although written in 2005, it’s still relevant… and you may learn a few helpful tricks. Enjoy!

Solar Panels Could Destroy Utilities

Posted by Dan On June 21st

In this article by David Roberts of Grist, solar panels are compared to cell phones… “Who would have believed 10 years ago that traditional wire line telephone customers could economically ‘cut the cord’?” The same could eventually happen with your connection to your utility.

As a supplier of distributed energy* to home owners and small businesses in SW Florida and the Tampa Bay area, and as one who strives to empower “the people”… this is music to my ears. Wanna dance?

*I feel compelled to include the definition of distributed energy because the term is used a lot, and yet I believe most people don’t know what it means.

Answer: FPL.

Yup, our local utility, FPL, is the largest US producer of renewable energy. Not many people know that. One important item to keep in mind as you read the article below: NextEra Energy = FPL.

Ready to send a “Dear John” letter to your utility? Fafco Solar can help you fall in love with the sun!

On March 28, Earth Policy Institute released interesting Data Highlights confirming US gasoline consumption has been on the decline since 2007.

Gasoline Comsumption

Some of the current trends supporting this:

  • A car fleet that is shrinking.
  • A general reduction in driving.
  • An improvement in fuel efficiency.

Times are changing. The younger generation is welcoming mass transit and car-sharing, and their time is spent cruising the Internet not the streets. The baby boomers are starting to retire and some are hanging up their keys.

Technology for vehicles is changing too! Fuel efficiency is improving. The day is already here where you can drive your car powered by the sun!

Let Fafco Solar show you how to use solar energy!
